VMware: vSphere & PowerCLI Update 1 released

Finally the vSphere Client is supported on Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 R2:

Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 support — This release adds support for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 as well as 64-bit Windows 2008 R2 as guest operating system platforms. In addition, the vSphere Client is now supported and can be installed on a Windows 7 platform.

Firefox-logoDe Mozilla Foundation heeft de definitieve 3.5-versie van zijn webbrowser Firefox uitgebracht. Versie 3.5 heeft Gecko 1.9.1 als renderengine, biedt ondersteuning voor JavaScript Object Notation, ondersteunt meer webtechnologieën en zou door de nieuwe javascript-engine betere prestaties bieden. Citrix: Before installing Hotfix Rollup pack 3

Voordat je Hotfix Rollup pack 3 installeerd lees je eerst CTX115626. Ik heb daar de volgende punten uit gehaald:

  • Als eerste check je CTX118771 voor bekende bugs tijdens het installeren en de oplossingen voor deze bugs.
  • Daarna upgrade je de Licentie server naar versie 11.5. Deze verzie kun je hier downloaden: Citrix Web site je hebt hier wel een MyCitrix account voor nodig.
  • Installeer daarna op alle Citrix Servers de Microsoft Visual C++ SP1 Redistributable. Deze kun je hier downloaden: Microsoft Web site.
  • Als je de Hotfix Rollup pack via een batch script unattended installeerd, kan deze setup sluiten met een foutmelding. Dit kun je omzeilen door niet de /qb switch te gebruiken maar de /qb- of de /qn switch.

Nadat je Hotfix Rollup pack 3 hebt geïnstalleerd.

  • Het kan zijn dat na de installatie van de Hotfix Rollup pack de Suite Monitoring and Alerting (SMA) service, die gebruikt wordt door het Access Management Console niet meer start. Dit kun je oplossen door Microsoft .Net 2.0 bij te werken naar SP1.

Voordat je de hotfix rolluppack gaat installeren is het ook nog verstandig om even in het Citrix forum te kijken: http://forums.citrix.com/category.jspa?categoryID=36

ESX35(i) Update 3 released

I guess you all got the e-mail from VMware, but for those who didn’t get the e-mail ESX 3.5 U3 is final.

This new release of ESX/ESXi 3.5 comes with the following enhancements:

  • Increase number of vCPUs per Core Limit (from 8 to 20)
  • New supported servers, NICs and storage IO controllers
  • New supported Guest Operating Systems

… and many more improvements and bug fixes.

VMware Server 2.0

Vmware heeft vandaag ook VMware Server 2.0 uitgebracht.

New Features in VMware Server 2

  • New operating system support: The broadest operating system support of any host-based virtualization platform currently available, including support for Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista Business Edition and Ultimate Edition (guest only), Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Ubuntu 8.04.
  • 64-bit operating system support: Use 64-bit guest operating systems on 64-bit hardware to enable more scalable and higher performing computing solutions.  In addition, Server 2 will run natively on 64-bit Linux host operating systems.
  • VMware Infrastructure (VI) Web Access management interface: VI Web Access management interface provides a simple, flexible, secure, intuitive and productive management experience.  Plus, access thousands of pre-built, pre-configured, ready-to-run enterprise applications packaged with an operating system inside a virtual machine at the Virtual Appliance Marketplace.
  • Independent virtual machine console: With the new VMware Remote Console, you can access your virtual machine consoles independent of the VI Web Access management interface.
  • More scalable virtual machines: Support for up to 8 GB of RAM and up to10 virtual network interface cards per virtual machine, transfer data at faster data rates from USB 2.0 devices plus add new SCSI hard disks and controllers to a running virtual machine.
  • Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS): Properly backup the state of the Windows virtual machines when using the snapshot feature to maintain data integrity of the applications running inside the virtual machine.
  • Support for Virtual Machine Interface (VMI): This feature enables transparent paravirtualization, in which a single binary version of the operating system can run either on native hardware or in paravirtualized mode to improve performance in specific Linux environments.
  • Virtual Machine Communication Interface (VMCI): Support for fast and efficient communication between a virtual machine and the host operating system and between two or more virtual machines on the same host.
  • Support for VIX API 1.5: This feature provides a programming interface for automating virtual machine and guest operations.

Manage Mozilla Firefox With a Active Directory (GPO)

Helaas word er bij Mozilla Firefox standaard geen ADM files meegeleverd. Deze ADM file heb je nodig om via een GPO, op een centrale plek, standaard instellingen te kunnen doorgeven aan de clients op je netwerk. Gelukkig is er een team begonnen met het ontwikkelen van een Custom ADM file voor Mozilla Firefox. Deze ADM files kun je downloaden vanaf hier: Sourceforge.net. Voordat je begint met het importeren en configureren van de ADM files, raad ik je aan om de volgende pdf eerst te lezen: ADM_Deploy.pdf.

Na het lezen van de pdf weet je waarschijnlijk al hoe het deployen van de ADM files in zijn werk gaat. Ik ga het toch nog even kort beschrijven:

  1. Je pakt de zipfile uit.
  2. Je importeert de ADM files
  3. Je plaatst de login/logoff scripts (diverse *.vbs scripts) op de juiste plaats en voegt deze toe.
  4. Je maakt de instellingen, waarvan jij denkt die nodig zijn.

Zodra je de ADM file hebt toegevoegd, zie je de nieuwe node Mozilla Firefox Default Settings verschijnen. In deze node kun je dus bijvoorbeeld de proxyserver configureren.
