Folder Size for Windows is een handige tool om in Details-view van Windows Explorer – in het Nederlands ook wel de Verkenner genoemd – de grootte van een map weer te geven. In Windows wordt in Details-overzicht de omvang van een map niet getoond. De belangrijkste reden dat deze functie standaard niet aanwezig is, is omdat Explorer de grootte van de mappen berekent door deze te inventariseren. In een vpn- of wan-netwerk neemt het berekenen van de mapgrootte flink wat dataverkeer in beslag, helemaal bij een groot netwerk. De nieuwste versie van het in C++ geschreven Folder Size for Windows is onlangs aangekomen bij versie 2.4. De update kan voor de 32bit– en 64bit-versie van Windows XP en Windows 2000 gedownload worden. Wat er zoal veranderd is in versie 2.4 kan hieronder gelezen worden:

Finally, 2.4 is ready for download. Check the changelog or the source code for new features and fixes. One much requested new feature is disabling drive types. Now you can disable folder size for your network drives. Or disable it for your USB drive if it’s not unmounting properly. But you might as well leave them all on, because it uses less memory now. If you could look what is in all the memory it’s using, it would be mostly strings of paths. These are now all relative paths instead of absolute paths. It’s still storing every relative path twice, so it could be cut down quite a bit more.

Finally you can download a 64-bit version! I’ve had it working for a while, but wanted to finish other changes before making install packages. It’s kind of a pain to manually make installers, and make sure I haven’t screwed up anything in the code. After I posted the 64-bit version, the next day I noticed that I posted the wrong file, that had a bug with logging into network drives. I updated the file without changing it in any other way, which is not a nice thing to do according to the MSI rules, but I didn’t want to update all those files too. Hopefully no one will notice. It will be interesting to see which package is more popular!

I don’t know if there will be a Vista version. An Ubuntu version is looking more likely.

The GIMP, een acroniem dat staat voor ‘GNU Image Manipulation Program’, is een fotobewerkingsprogramma en wordt door velen beschouwd als de opensource tegenhanger van Adobe Photoshop en Corel Paint Shop Pro. Het programma is beschikbaar voor verschillende besturingssystemen zoals Linux, Mac OS X en Windows. De ontwikkelaars hebben de eerste bugfix-release in de 2.4-reeks uitgebracht met 2.4.1 als het versienummer. De aankondiging en lijst met aanpassingen zien er als volgt uit:

Mozilla heeft vanmorgen een nieuwe versie van Firefox beschikbaar gesteld. Het gaat om versie 2.0.0.9, die vanaf deze map voor Linux, Mac OS X en Windows gedownload kan worden. Firefox is een opensource webbrowser die standaard voorzien is van tabbed browsing, een pop-up blocker en een rss-reader. Daarnaast is het mogelijk extra functionaliteiten toe te voegen door middel van add-ons en het uiterlijk van Firefox via themes te wijzigen. Maandag maakten de ontwikkelaars van Firefox bekend dat in de 2.0.0.8-release vijf kritieke bugs werden ontdekt en dat er hard gewerkt werd aan een nieuwe versie. Een van de bugs die verholpen zou zijn, is verantwoordelijk voor het niet inschakelen van add-ons. Welke bugs precies geplet zijn, is nog niet bekendgemaakt. Wel hebben de developers een lijst samengesteld van de op te lossen bugs:

The 2.0.0.8 release fixed some 200 issues, but accidentally regressed a few things. Most users won’t see any difference or experience any problems, and those 200 fixes make the 2.0.0.8 update very valuable, but you should never have to choose functionality over security. So we’re working fast to understand and fix these problems, and will shortly be issuing a 2.0.0.9 update to address them. The specific problems are:

• Bug 400406 – Firefox will ignore the “clear” CSS property when used beneath a box that is using the “float” property. There is a temporary workaround JS/CSS code available for web developers with affected layouts.
• Bug 400467 – Windows Vista users will get “Java not found” or “Java not working” errors when trying to load Java applets after updating. To fix this, users can right-click the Firefox icon and “Run as administrator”, then browse to a page with a Java applet — doing this once will fix the problem and permanently restore Java functionality.
• Bug 396695 – Add-ons are disabled after updating. Users can fix this problem by opening their profile folder and removing three files (extensions.rdf, extensions.ini and extensions.cache)
• Bug 400421 – Removing a single area element from an image map will cause the entire map to disappear. There is no workaround available at this time.
• Bug 400735 – Some Windows users may experience crashes at startup. There is no workaround available at this time.

De mensen van het ‘GNU Image Manipulation Program’ hebben een nieuwe versie van het beeldbewerkingsprogramma The GIMP uitgebracht. Het gaat om versie 2.4.0, die vanaf deze ftp-map of deze pagina gedownload kan worden voor Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris en Mac OS X. The GIMP wordt beschouwd als de opensource tegenhanger van Adobe Photoshop. Het programma biedt uitgebreide mogelijkheden om afbeeldingen te bewerken en in een groot aantal formaten op te slaan. De ontwikkelaars hebben versie 2.4.0 voorzien van onder meer een nieuw default icon theme, nieuwe selection tools en scalable brushes. In dit document staat beschreven wat er nog meer veranderd is in de vernieuwde GIMP.

Zojuist is versie 0.9.48 van Wine uitgebracht. Met behulp van dit programma is het mogelijk om MS-DOS- en Windows-programma’s te draaien op onder andere Linux, FreeBSD en Mac OS X. Wine wordt onderhouden door een grote groep enthousiaste ontwikkelaars en in plaats van nieuwe releases uit te brengen als er nieuwe features aan de software toegevoegd zijn heeft men er voor gekozen elke twee weken een nieuwe build uit te brengen. Gisteren is er een update verschenen voor de eind september uitgebrachte versie 2.3 van WordPress. WordPress is een stuk weblogsoftware die beschikbaar gesteld wordt onder de gpl-licentie. De software kan naar eigen zeggen binnen vijf minuten werkend gemaakt worden, althans als er al een server met PHP en MySQL beschikbaar is. Naast het ‘bloggen’ is het ook mogelijk om de functionaliteit van WordPress verder uit te breiden en het uiterlijk aan te passen door middel van plugins en themes. In versie 2.3.1 zijn meer dan twintig bugs verholpen, de belangrijkste zijn hieronder te vinden:
