The GIMP 2.4.4

Verleden week is er een nieuwe versie uitgebracht in de stabiele tak van The Gimp. De naam van dit fotobewerkingsprogramma is een afkorting voor ’the GNU Image Manipulation Program’. De software is beschikbaar voor diverse besturingssystemen, waaronder Windows, Freebsd, Linux, Mac OS X en Solaris. The Gimp wordt door velen beschouwd als de opensource tegenhanger van Adobe Photoshop en Paint Shop Pro, maar door het openen van vele schermen vraagt het wel enige gewenning. Het changelog van versie 2.4.4 laat de volgende veranderingen zien:

  • fixed handling of PSD files with empty layer names (bug #504149)
  • merged TinyScheme bug-fixes
  • removed duplicate entry from Tango palette
  • corrected parameter range in Chip Away script (bug #506110)
  • reduced redraw priority and speed of the marching ants (bug #479875)
  • fixed out-of-bounds array access in Convolution Matrix plug-in
  • reduced rounding errors in Convolution Matrix plug-in (bug #508114)
  • fixed potential crash on missing CMYK color profile
  • fixed crash in Bumpmap plug-in when called from some scripts (bug #509608)
  • merged some other minor fixes from trunk
  • translation updates (de, it, lt, ru, sv, uk)

Xen 3.2.0

Xen is een virtuele machine hypervisor voor het x86-platform en laat meerdere besturingssystemen gelijktijdig op één systeem draaien zonder de prestaties drastisch te beïnvloeden. Voor meer informatie over Xen en de bijbehorende community verwijzen we jullie door naar deze en deze pagina. Op dit moment worden alleen Linux en NetBSD ondersteund als hostsystemen, maar men is druk bezig om ook andere besturingssystemen, zoals Solaris, volledig te ondersteunen. De ontwikkelaars hebben Xen 3.2.0 uitgebracht met de volgende aankondiging op de mailing list:

This has been a while coming, and represents the culmination of a lot of work to improve architectural cleanliness ‘under the hood’, while also providing a range of new user-visible features including:

  • Xen Security Modules (XSM)
  • ACPI S3 suspend-to-RAM support for the host system
  • Preliminary PCI pass-through support (using appropriate Intel or AMD I/O-virtualisation hardware)
  • Preliminary support for a wider range of bootloaders in fully virtualised (HVM) guests, using full emulation of x86 ‘real mode’.
  • Faster emulation of standard (non-super) VGA modes for HVM guests
  • Configurable timer modes for HVM guests, depending on how the guest OS manages time-keeping
  • Many other changes and enhancements across all supported machine architectures

OpenOffice.org 3.0

ooDe organisatie achter OpenOffice.org werkt hard aan versie 3.0 van de suite met kantoorapplicaties. De hoofd code-lijn is nu geheel gericht op versie 3.0; de code-lijn van versie 2.4 is daarvan losgemaakt. Als nieuwe functies vinden we in versie 3.0 onder meer:
– filters voor Microsoft OOXml-bestanden (MsOffice 2007);
– een geïntegreerde agenda- en mail-applicatie;
– direct gebruik op de Macintosh mogelijk (zonder X-11).
De geplande release-datum van OpenOffice.org 3.0 ligt in september 2008. De eerste beta-versie staat vijf maanden daarvoor, in april op het programma.

OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 NL

OpenOffice.org klein logoEen kleine twee weken na het uitkomen van versie 2.3.1 van OpenOffice.org is dit opensource officepakket nu ook in de Nederlandse uitvoering beschikbaar. OpenOffice.org wordt geleverd met een tekstverwerker (Writer), een spreadsheetprogramma (Calc), een presentatieprogramma (Impress), een tekenprogramma (Draw) en het databaseprogramma Base. Op dit moment zijn alleen de versies voor Windows en Linux beschikbaar, de versies voor Mac OS X en Solaris laten nog heel even op zich wachten:

De actuele Nederlandstalige stabiele versie OpenOffice.org 2.3.1 is er voor Windows (98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista), en Linux (x86). Voor Apple Mac OSX (x86), Apple Mac OSX (PPC) en Solaris zijn er ook versies, maar die zijn nog niet getest en daarom niet vrijgegeven. Meld je even als je bij het testen wil meehelpen! De iets oudere versie 2.3.0 voor Mac OSX is nog te downloaden op deze pagina.

Snowglobe, shelf plugins in compiz-fusion-git

Compiz-fusion-git packages have been updated in home:cyberorg repository. It has all the new bling the community has to offer.

What’s new? there is a Shelf plugin by Kristian Lyngstøl that lets you scale down the window size, obligatory screenies follow.

This one has scaled windows rotated with freewins plugin.

Keeping with the winter theme, there is now a Snowglobe plugin by David “Metastability” Mikos , and it has got a snowman right in the middle of the cube.

Warning: This is a test repository meant for developers and users that can fix anything that can go wrong by installing these packages. Have a lot of fun!

SSL-Explorer 1.0.0_RC11 released

SSL-Explorer version 1.0.0_RC11 has been released. SSL-Explorer is the world’s first open-source, browser based SSL VPN solution. This unique remote access security solution provides users and businesses alike with a means of securely accessing network resources from outside the network perimeter using only a standard web browser.

The 1.0.0_RC11 release provides a number of important bug fixes to many areas of the system (see change log below).
