Tijdens de LinuxWorld Conference & Expo in San Francisco heeft Novell CEO Ron Hovsepian een lans gebroken voor een gestandaardiseerd certificeringsproces voor Linux-applicaties. “Volgens mij is het eerste wat we voor Linux nodig hebben applicaties”, zei hij. Op het niveau van de API’s is Linux over de verschillende distributies niet consistent en certificaten van applicaties zijn niet overdraagbaar, aldus Hovsepian. Volgens hem moet het mogelijk worden om onafhankelijk van leveranciers applicaties te laten certificeren. Gecertificeerde applicaties zouden dan onder meer distributies functioneren.

Nieuwe Novell ZENworks producten
Novell heeft ZenWorks Orchestrator 1.1 en ZenWorks Virtual Manager uitgebracht. Hiermee kunnen Xen en VMware images worden beheerd en kunnen machines worden gemigreerd. Daarnaast kunnen profielen worden gebouwd (bijvoorbeeld voor SAP) en met de gemeenschap worden gedeeld, waardoor die profielen door anderen kunnen worden verbeterd. Novell koopt Senforce
Gisteren maakte Novell de overname bekend van Senforce Technologies. Novell wil de beveiligingsproducten van Senforce verwerken in de ZENworks producten. Senforce doet aan endpoint security en bezit software voor Network Access Control (NAC), die wordt gebruikt om te bepalen welke apparaten toegang mogen hebben tot een netwerk, en software voor het beschermen van mobiele apparaten tegen hacks of het uitlekken van data.
Per onmiddellijk komt er een ‘ZENworks Endpoint Security’ dat bestaat uit de tools van Senforce.
XenEnterprise v4
Gisteren verscheen van XenSource XenEnterprise v4, het product dat het moet gaan opnemen met VMware. XenEnterprise v4 bevat een reeks nieuwe functies, zoals XenMotion, waarmee meer hosts kunnen worden samengevoegd in een eenheid die vanuit een centrale plek kan worden beheerd. Virtuele machines kunnen binnen die eenheid eenvoudig worden gemigreerd en nieuwe virtuele machines kunnen eenvoudig worden toegevoegd. Dankzij de 64-bit Hypervisor wordt tot 128 GB fysiek geheugen ondersteund, en per guest 32 GB. Voor het maken van backups werkt XenSource samen met Symantec; de Veritas Storage Foundation software ondersteunt XenEnterprise v4, en moet later ook worden meegeleverd.
Een licentie op XenEnterprise v4 kost $2.499,-. Ondersteuni ng kan middels een jaarabonnement worden gekocht.

Novell Client 2.0 for OpenSUSE 10.2The GIMP 2.4.0 rc1
The Gimp, een acroniem dat staat voor GNU Image Manipulation Program, is een fotobewerkingsprogramma en wordt door velen beschouwd als de opensource tegenhanger van Adobe Photoshop en Corel Paint Shop Pro. Het programma is beschikbaar voor verschillende besturingssystemen zoals Linux, Mac OS X en Windows. De ontwikkelaars hebben de eerste release candidate van versie 2.4.0 uitgebracht en voorzien van de volgende aankondiging en lijst met aanpassingen:
The next stable GIMP release is close. The developers made available a first release candidate for GIMP 2.4.0. This marks the end of the development cycle towards GIMP 2.4. All new features should be complete and the API is now frozen. There are however still a few bugs to fix and some minor changes pending in some places.
Changes in GIMP 2.4.0 rc1:
- further improvement to the Print plug-in
- completed the color management functionality for 2.4
- store JPEG setting with the image and use them when saving as JPEG
- further improved the rectangle tools, in particular handling of the fixed aspect ratio

openSuse 10.3 beta 1
De ontwikkelaars van de openSuse-community hebben de eerste bètaversie uitgebracht van openSuse 10.3, sinds ongeveer een jaar de nieuwe naam van Suse Linux om verwarring met Suse Linux Enterprise-producten te voorkomen. Zoals gewoonlijk zijn er verschillende uitgaves binnen te halen, een volledige dvd met opensource- en niet-opensourceonderdelen, een cd voor een kale installatie met KDE of GNOME, en verschillende add-on-cd’s. De aankondiging van deze eerste bètaversie ziet er als volgt uit:
The openSUSE team is proud to announce the first Beta release of openSUSE 10.3. There are many exciting enhancements and features in the new release. Among these are a whole new and greatly improved package management stack (libzypp), significantly faster boot time, parts of KDE 4, a 1-CD KDE Install and a 1-CD GNOME install, beautiful green artwork, a new One-Click Install technology that integrates with the openSUSE Build Service and much more.
Desktop Advances:
1-Click Install: As we recently announced, the openSUSE Build Service front-end got a complete makeover and now also utilizes the new One-Click Install technology. This new feature allows you to install applications at the single click of a button. More announcements on the way this is used are to come.
KDE 4: In the early stages of development we noted that openSUSE was to be among the early adopters of KDE 4.0, and we can start to see this coming through in openSUSE 10.3. The latest stable KDE 3.5.7 is included as the default KDE session, but this release also includes some KDE 4 applications (such as KDE games) in by default. All other parts of KDE 4 are directly available in the official online repositories, and of course the KDE 4 repository in the openSUSE Build Service will continue to regularly release snapshots.
New Media Selection:
This new release has a few changes in media, which also includes two new CDs: one KDE installation CD, and one GNOME installation CD, so you no longer have to download three CDs to get openSUSE running!
Under the Hood:
New Package Management: The new package management system (libzypp) is a significant improvement over the old one offering you many advanced features, increased reliability, and an incredible speed-up.
Improved Boot Time: Improvements in boot time were frequently-suggested enhancement requests from openSUSE users. As the result of continued tests, we can now release the first set of improvements to the init (boot) scripts, with even more to come in the future.
