VMware Server 2.0
Vmware heeft vandaag ook VMware Server 2.0 uitgebracht.
New Features in VMware Server 2
- New operating system support: The broadest operating system support of any host-based virtualization platform currently available, including support for Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista Business Edition and Ultimate Edition (guest only), Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Ubuntu 8.04.
- 64-bit operating system support: Use 64-bit guest operating systems on 64-bit hardware to enable more scalable and higher performing computing solutions. In addition, Server 2 will run natively on 64-bit Linux host operating systems.
- VMware Infrastructure (VI) Web Access management interface: VI Web Access management interface provides a simple, flexible, secure, intuitive and productive management experience. Plus, access thousands of pre-built, pre-configured, ready-to-run enterprise applications packaged with an operating system inside a virtual machine at the Virtual Appliance Marketplace.
- Independent virtual machine console: With the new VMware Remote Console, you can access your virtual machine consoles independent of the VI Web Access management interface.
- More scalable virtual machines: Support for up to 8 GB of RAM and up to10 virtual network interface cards per virtual machine, transfer data at faster data rates from USB 2.0 devices plus add new SCSI hard disks and controllers to a running virtual machine.
- Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS): Properly backup the state of the Windows virtual machines when using the snapshot feature to maintain data integrity of the applications running inside the virtual machine.
- Support for Virtual Machine Interface (VMI): This feature enables transparent paravirtualization, in which a single binary version of the operating system can run either on native hardware or in paravirtualized mode to improve performance in specific Linux environments.
- Virtual Machine Communication Interface (VMCI): Support for fast and efficient communication between a virtual machine and the host operating system and between two or more virtual machines on the same host.
- Support for VIX API 1.5: This feature provides a programming interface for automating virtual machine and guest operations.

Openoffice.org 3.0 rc2
De ontwikkelaars van Openoffice.org hebben de tweede release candidate van versie 3.0 uitgebracht. Dit opensource-officepakket voorziet in een tekstverwerker, spreadsheet-, presentatie-, teken- en databaseprogramma. Nieuw in versie 3.0 is onder andere het startcenter en dat de Mac OS X-versie geen X11 meer nodig heeft, maar zich als elke andere Aqua-applicatie gedraagt. Verder kan het pakket nu overweg met versie 1.2 van het Open Document Format en documenten die gemaakt zijn met Microsoft Office 2007. De uitgebreide lijst met veranderingen vermeldt alle punten van 3.0 en verschilt daarom niet veel van de lijst bij vorige vermelding in de Meuktracker, daarom laten we deze keer slechts de aankondiging op het Openoffice.org-blog zien:

Xbmc Media Center Atlantis bèta 1
De ontwikkelaars van het Xbmc Media Center hebben deze week de eerste bètaversie vrijgegeven van hun crossplatform mediacentersoftware. Naast vele verbeteringen aan de audio- en videocodecs is de voornaamste nieuwe feature de ondersteuning van het Windows-, Linux- en Mac OS X-platform; voorheen werd alleen de Xbox ondersteund. Nieuw ten opzichte van de eerdere alphatestversies is de nieuwe standaard PM3.HD-skin, de live-cd en integratie met iTunes en iPhoto. Een exact overzicht van de veranderingen in Xbmc Media Center hebben de ontwikkelaars niet vrijgegeven.

WordPress 2.6.2
De ontwikkelaars van WordPress hebben een nieuwe versie van hun weblogsoftware online gezet. Het programma is hierdoor bij versienummer 2.6.2 aangekomen, die door te klikken op deze link als zip-bestand gedownload kan worden. WordPress wordt onder de gpl-licentie beschikbaar gesteld en kan naar eigen zeggen binnen vijf minuten op een systeem dat voorzien is van Mysql en PHP gedraaid worden. Naast het bloggen is het ook mogelijk om WordPress door middel van plugins uit te breiden en een ander uiterlijk te geven door gebruik te maken van themes. Welke veranderingen in versie 2.6.2 zijn doorgevoerd, kan op deze pagina worden nagelezen. Hieronder zijn de release notes gepost:
Stefan Esser recently warned developers of the dangers of SQL Column Truncation and the weakness of mt_rand(). With his help we worked around these problems and are now releasing WordPress 2.6.2. If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade. With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password. The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit. However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password. Stefan Esser will release details of the complete attack shortly. The attack is difficult to accomplish, but its mere possibility means we recommend upgrading to 2.6.2.
Other PHP apps are susceptible to this class of attack. To protect all of your apps, grab the latest version of Suhosin. If you’ve already updated Suhosin, your existing WordPress install is already protected from the full exploit. You should still upgrade to 2.6.2 if you allow open user registration so as to prevent the possibility of passwords being randomized.

Applicatie virtualisatie van Novell
Novell heeft met ‘Novell ZENworks Application Virtualization’ (ZAV) haar eigen applicatie-virtualisatie oplossing op de markt gebracht. Applicaties kunnen er mee in een ‘package’, een enkel .exe-bestand worden gestopt en in een eigen virtuele omgeving worden gedraaid. Novell heeft voor populaire applicaties al ’templates’ gemaakt voor een snelle installatie met behulp van ZAV. Het gebruik van gevirtualiseerde applicaties scheelt in het testen van software voor bepaalde combinaties met besturingssystemen. Het ziet er naar uit dat ZAV het in de markt moet gaan opnemen tegen Microsoft Application Virtualisation en Citrix Thinstall.
Novell ZENworks Application Virtualization kost 39 USD per gebruiker.
Applicatie-virtualisatie expert Ruben Spruijt zegt over deze oplossing van Novell; De oplossing die onder water gebruikt wordt (wat ik begrijp uit een OEM-agreement) is Xenocode.
