Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 (IR1a)

4701005 The Novell® Client™ 2 for Windows Vista/2008* provides Windows connectivity to NetWare® and OES Linux servers. With the Novell Client, you can browse through authorized Novell directories, transfer files, and use advanced Novell services directly from a Windows Vista workstation or a Windows 2008 server.

After it is installed on workstations, the Novell Client lets users enjoy the full range of Novell services, including authentication via Novell eDirectory™, network browsing and service resolution, and secure and reliable file system access. All services are delivered through industry-standard protocols. The Client also supports the Novell traditional NCP™ protocol.

The Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 is a separate release from the current Novell Client 4.91 for Windows XP/2003. The Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 supports both the x86 and x64 versions of Windows Vista and has many of the same features as the Novell Client 4.91 for Windows XP/2003.

The Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 is supported on the following platforms:

  • Windows Vista Business (x86 or x64)
  • Windows Vista Enterprise (x86 or x64)
  • Windows Vista Ultimate (x86 or x64)
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (x86 or x64)
  • Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (x86 or x64)

The Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 might run but is not supported on Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, and Windows Vista Home Premium editions. The Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 only supports full installations of Windows Server 2008, and is not supported on Server Core installations. The Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 will not install or run on Windows XP, 2000, or 2003.

Windows 7 en de Novell Client

De Novell Client is een hele aardige onder Windows 7. Normaliter kun je met de Novell Client voor de huidige versie van Windows niet uit de voeten op de nieuwe versie. Novell wacht in de regel totdat de nieuwe Windows versie daadwerkelijk ge-released is, waarna je vervolgens 90 tot 180 dagen later pas een officiele versie van de Novell Client ziet verschijnen. Windows Vista was bijvoorbeeld eind 2006 klaar, closed beta’s van de Novell Client32 verschenen in Januari 2007, de public beta in Juni 2007 en de officiele release enige tijd later. Met Windows 7 zie je nu iets bijzonders gebeuren:

Inderdaad. De Novell Client 2 for Windows Vista/2008 kun je ook gewoon gebruiken onder Windows 7. En dat is niet zo heel opmerkelijk als je bedenkt dat de kernels van deze drie gebaseerd zijn op de Windows NT 6.x kernel.

De client nestelt zich uiteraard weer netjes met een icon in de System Tray:

Als je ’t overigens vervelend vindt dat je de System Tray icons niet meer direct ziet … dat is eenvoudig aan te passen door de configuratie van de zogenaamde ‘Notification Area’ (idd. een mooie verzamelnaam voor dit alles) aan te passen.

Je kunt dit alleen voor de ‘Novell Client System Tray Menu’ instellen door te kiezen voor ‘Show icon and notifications’:

of je kunt voor alle icons in één keer dit instellen en het vinkje bij ‘Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar’ zetten. Dan zie je dit:

De meest spannend issue welke ik tot nu toe ben tegengekomen met de Novell Client is het feit dat het login script niet wordt uitgevoerd op het moment dat je je aanmeldt. Waar het wel netjes werkte als je aanlogt door het icoontje (‘ze Big Red N’ 🙂 in de System Tray te gebruiken.

Ik zocht dat eerst in de hoek van dit verhaal: “Login Script Execution Starts Before User’s Desktop” en heb derhalve met de Policy Editor de genoemde setting aangepast:

… maar dat bleek het niet direct te zijn. Een paar blikken in de Novell fora leverde op waar het wél aan ligt:

“The Situation is essentially still the same as my April 2009 response earlier in this thread.  Although in addition to the workaround of logging into eDirectory from the red ‘N’ instead of from the Windows welcome screen, its now also known that this issue is specific to the
split-session UAC handling of Administrators group members (a.k.a. “admin approval mode”) on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. So additional workarounds can include disabling admin approval mode in the UAC security policies, so that Administrators group members are handled more like non-Administrators users with regard to UAC elevation.  Or, logging in as a non-Administrators member.  Or, if desirable, simply turning off UAC would avoid the issue too.”

Maw. voor dit moment gewoon UAC uitzetten 🙂

Dan wordt het login script netjes doorlopen …

VMware ESX(i) 4.0.0 build 171294

image_thumb7Virtualisatie heeft de laatste jaren een steeds prominentere plek veroverd in het bedrijfsleven. Bekende namen zijn onder andere Xen en VMware. Het laatstgenoemde bedrijf heeft met zijn vSphere 4 een stevig platform in handen. Een belangrijk onderdeel van dat platform is VMware ESX, dit wordt ook als een gratis te gebruiken bare-metal-hypervisor werd uitgebracht met VMware ESXi als productnaam. RVTools 2.5.5

RVTools is a small .NET 2.0 application which uses the VI SDK to display information about your virtual machines. Interacting with VirtualCenter 2.x or ESX 3.x RVTools is able to list information about cpu, memory, disks, nics, cd-rom, floppy drives, snapshots, VMware tools, ESX hosts, datastores and health checks. With RVTools you can disconnect the cd-rom or floppy drives from the virtual machines and RVTools is able to list the current version of the VMware Tools installed inside each virtual machine. and update them to the latest version.

Upcoming BETA Releases GroupWise 8.01 (SP1)

GroupWise 8.0.1 – which will officially release in a couple of months – builds upon the very solid release of 8.0.0. We have had significant uptake and rollout of GroupWise 8 throughout our customer base and are very confident that the rest of you – those that by policy or choice ALWAYS wait for the first support pack – will be very pleased. As you already know, GroupWise 8 has a ton of new features and functionality and now with the added bake time, stability and reliability of the support pack – there is not better time than now to empower your end-users with significant benefits of their personal productivity tool.

The overall effort of 8.0.1 was to simply fix bugs and work out issues that usually only are found during actual deployments of the product. However, there are few other benefits and added functionality that can be found with 8.0.1.

Citrix XenServer 5.5

citrixVanaf gisteren is Citrix XenServer 5.5 gratis te downloaden. Enkele nieuwe functies in XenServer 5.5: geconsolideerde backup, conversie- en zoekfuncties, integratie met Active Directory en guest support voor bijna elke versie van Windows of Linux. Volgens Citrix zijn er van XenServer, sinds het gratis beschikbaar stellen in maart, al meer dan 100.000 exemplaren gedownload. Naast Citrix XenServer 5.5 is ook versie 5.5 van Citrix Essentials voor XenServer en Hyper-V beschikbaar. Deze bevat nieuwe beheermogelijkheden voor gebruikers van Citrix XenServer of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Nieuw in versie 5.5 van Citrix Essentials is uitgebreide storage-integratie, geautomatiseerd lab en stage management en dynamic workload balancing.
