Het lange wachten is over, want zojuist heeft OpenOffice.org de langverwachte versie 2.1.0 van het gelijknamige opensource-officepakket beschikbaar gesteld voor onmiddellijke download. Dit programma wordt geleverd met een tekstverwerker (Writer), een spreadsheetprogramma (Calc), een presentatieprogramma (Impress), een tekenprogramma (Draw) en het databaseprogramma Base. Downloads zijn beschikbaar voor Windows, Linux, Solaris en Mac OS X en variëren in grootte tussen de 90 en 120MB. Op dit moment zijn alleen de Engelse en Duitse uitvoering nog maar beschikbaar, maar houd de komende dagen de Nederlandstalige website in de gaten. Maandag 23 oktober 2006, 08:55 – Bijna een week nadat Microsoft de officiële versie van zijn nieuwste browser presenteerde, komt Mozilla ook met een nieuwe browserversie.

Dinsdag wordt de officiële versie van Firefox 2.0 geïntroduceerd. Volgens de makers van de browser bevat Firefox 2.0 ook enkele nieuwe elementen die in Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) nog ontbreken.

In de Firefox 2.0 kan de browser de pagina’s bewaren wat bijvoorbeeld handig is als de pc plotseling crasht of moet herstarten. Die functie is overigens al enige tijd via losse extenies beschikbaar voor de huidige versie van Firefox, maar in 2.0 zit het standaard ingebouwd.

Net als IE7 heeft ook Firefox 2.0 een phishing-filter om mogelijke oplichterssites te blokkeren. Maar Firefox werkt hierbij anders dan IE7, benadrukt Christopher Beard, president of products bij Mozilla.

IE7 controleert elke bezochte pagina met een lijst met phishingsites die door derde wordt bijgehouden. Firefox maakt gebruik van een ‘blacklist’ van bekende phishingsites. Deze informatie wordt elk half uur of elk uur geactualiseerd. Op die manier wordt er geen informatie over de bezochte sites naar derden gestuurd, aldus Beard.

Verder is het browsen met tabbladen in Firefox 2.0 verbeterd. Elke tab heeft zelf nu een eigen knop om het tabblad te sluiten. Tot slot is de browser uitgerust met een spellingscontole vergelijkbaar met die in tekstverwerkingsprogramma’s.

Mozilla kan een nieuw product goed gebruiken in zijn strijd met Microsoft. Recente cijfers van Onestat geven aan dat Firefox terrein aan het verliezen is ten koste van Internet Explorer. Sinds juli zou het marktaandeel van Firefox zijn gedaald met 1,4 procentpunt tot 11,4 procent.

Volgens Beard is er helemaal geen sprake van een afname van het Firefox-gebruik. “Op dit moment gebruiken 70 miljoen tot 80 miljoen mensen Firefox. En dat alleen maar stijgen als we deze week Firefox 2.0 introduceren.”

Deze nieuwe versie beschikt weer over een aantal handige nieuwe functies zoals het exporteren naar LaTex maar vooral de mogelijkheid om extensies te gebruiken valt op. Hiermee kan je OpenOffice.org uitbreiden met allerlei handige functies. Versie 2.0.4 is met de volgende aankondiging wereldkundig gemaakt:

De ontwikkelaars achter het XboxMediaCenter Project hebben enkele dagen geleden met versie 2.0.0 een nieuwe mijlpaal bereikt. XBMC tovert een gemodificeerde Xbox-spelcomputer om tot een multimediamachine die in staat is om beeld en geluid af te spelen dat geëncodeerd is met populaire formaten zoals DivX, XviD, MP3 en MPEG. Een uitgebreid overzicht van de mogelijkheden is op deze pagina te vinden. Wegens juridische redenen is alleen de broncode te downloaden van de officiële XBMC-pagina, en deze zal met XDK, de Xbox System Development Kit, gecompileerd moeten worden. De lijst met veranderingen is te lang om hier weer te geven, dus we volstaan met een link naar de pagina waar deze te vinden zijn. In de aankondiging voor versie 2.0.0 hadden de ontwikkelaars het volgende te melden:

Firefox 2, ook wel ‘Bon Echo’ genoemd, is een cross platform open-sourcebrowser voor het internet en bevat een aantal nieuwe features en verbeteringen ten opzichte van de huidige Firefox 1-reeks. Zo heeft bijvoorbeeld elke tab een aparte sluitknop en kent de browser ‘built-in phishing protection’. De ontwikkelaars van Mozilla hebben de eerste release candidate van Firefox 2.0 beschikbaar gesteld. Deze versie kan vanaf hier gedownload worden in diverse uitvoeringen, waaronder voor Linux, Mac OS X en Windows. Het is niet bekend wat er in RC1 precies veranderd is, aangezien de release notes hetzelfde zijn als die van beta 2. Maar vermoedelijk zijn de nodige bugs uit de software gehaald en is de stabiliteit iets verbeterd:

• Visual Refresh: Firefox 2’s theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience. For instance, toolbar buttons now glow when you hover over them. We will continue to improve the look and feel throughout the release candidate process.
• Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the Phishing Protection feature is enabled.
• Enhanced search capabilities: Search term suggestions will now appear as users type in the integrated search box when using the Google, Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines. A new search engine manager makes it easier to add, remove and re-order search engines, and users will be alerted when Firefox encounters a website that offers new search engines that the user may wish to install.
• Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab button. Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll back and forth between their tabs. The History menu will keep a list of recently closed tabs, and a shortcut lets users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.
• Resuming your browsing session: The Session Restore feature restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms, and in-progress downloads from the last user session. It will be activated automatically when installing an application update or extension, and users will be asked if they want to resume their previous session after a system crash.
• Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds: Users can decide how to handle Web feeds (like this one), either subscribing to them via a Web service or in a standalone RSS reader, or adding them as Live Bookmarks. My Yahoo!, Bloglines and Google Reader come pre-loaded as Web service options, but users can add any Web service that handles RSS feeds.
• Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms (like this one) without having to use a separate application.
• Live Titles: When a website offers a microsummary (a regularly updated summary of the most important information on a Web page), users can create a bookmark with a “Live Title”. Compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated with the latest information. There are several websites that can be bookmarked with Live Titles, and even more add-ons to generate Live Titles for other popular websites.
• Improved Add-ons manager: The new Add-ons manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes, combining them both in a single tool.
• JavaScript 1.7: JavaScript 1.7 is a language update introducing several new features such as generators, iterators, array comprehensions, let expressions, and destructuring assignments. It also includes all the features of JavaScript 1.6.
• Extended search plugin format: The Firefox search engine format now supports search engine plugins written in Sherlock and OpenSearch formats and allows search engines to provide search term suggestions.
• Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
• Client-side session and persistent storage: New support for storing structured data on the client side, to enable better handling of online transactions and improved performance when dealing with large amounts of data, such as documents and mailboxes. This is based on the WHATWG specification for client-side session and persistent storage.
• SVG text: Support for the svg:textpath specification enables SVG text to follow a curve or shape.
• New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.
