RIM BES 4.1 SP5 for GroupWise

I pinged my contacts at RIM and got the following info.

During the last GWAVA one of the presenters from RIM communicated that RIM is targeting SP5 for mid-year. It will include HTML and email rendering support along with some additional features. RIM is targeting feature parity with other platforms around the same time.

In email my RIM contact also mentioned that SP5 for the other platforms has not yet officially shipped. So now that BES for GroupWise 4.1.4 has shipped, all platforms are at the same SP level (at least for a little while). This seems to be confirmed by the link <…> provided from RIM which says that SP5 is “Coming Soon”.

I agree that it’s not good that BES SPs for GroupWise ship behind the Exchange SPs. In RIM’s defense I’ll state that we’re pushing them very hard to move their architecture away from the client API to SOAP. And as they make incremental steps to this effect with each release it can introduce bugs which cause delays.

We work very close with their dev team. From my interactions with that team and other contacts at RIM, I’m convinced they have a very talented and committed team working on GroupWise. I think you’ll see improvement in quality with each release as well as Exchange SP vs. GroupWise SP availability window shorten.

RIM verbetert Blackberry-platform

Het Canadese Research in Motion heeft op de Lotusphere 2008-beurs een update van zijn Blackberry-mailplatform aangekondigd. Nieuw is onder meer de mogelijkheid om Office-bestanden te bewerken.

Research In Motion (logo)Het bewerken en opslaan van Office-bestanden wordt mogelijk door de integratie van Documents to Go van Dataviz in de Blackberry-clientsoftware. Tot dusver konden Office-bestanden alleen worden geopend. De update maakt het ook mogelijk om e-mails die niet meer op de Blackberry staan, alsnog op de server te doorzoeken. Verder kan er voortaan eerst gecontroleerd worden of een collega beschikbaar is, alvorens een afspraak gepland wordt. Blackberry-gebruikers van bedrijven die werken met IBM’s Lotus Sametime of Live Communications Server van Microsoft krijgen na de update bovendien verbeterde adresboekintegratie, en ‘click-to-call’- en ‘convert-to-call’-functionaliteit.

Systeembeheerders zullen blij zijn met de nieuwe beheer- en beveiligingsmogelijkheden. De Blackberry-infrastructuur kan beter in de gaten gehouden worden en voor het updaten van Blackberry’s kan wifi gebruikt worden. Ook kan voortaan vooraf bepaald worden welke programma’s gebruik van gps mogen maken, en hoe lang de Blackberry bluetooth-connecties mag accepteren. De update voegt verder ondersteuning toe voor extra api’s van Java Micro Edition. De update voor Blackberry-telefoons en de Blackberry Enterprise Server komt beschikbaar in de eerste helft van 2008.
