VMware heeft versie 14 van zijn virtualisatiesoftware Workstation Pro uitgebracht. Met dit programma is het mogelijk om een of meer virtuele computers aan te maken, waarop een groot aantal verschillende besturingssystemen kan worden geïnstalleerd. Op die manier kunnen ze naast elkaar worden gebruikt, in tegenstelling tot een dualbootopstelling, waarbij voor het ene of het andere OS moet worden gekozen. Ubuntu 17.10 beta 1
De ontwikkelaars achter de Linux-distributie Ubuntu en de verschillende smaken daarvan, zoals Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin en Xubuntu, hebben de eerste bètaversie uitgebracht van Artful Aardvark, die versienummer 17.10 zal krijgen. Op dit moment is er nog geen bèta-uitgave van Ubuntu zelf uitgebracht, maar de verschillende smaken kunnen wel al uitgeprobeerd worden. Linux 4.13 Released, This Is What’s New
Linux Kernel 4.13 is officially out!
Announcing the release on the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML) Linus Torvalds says: “last week was actually somewhat eventful, but not enough to push me to delay 4.13,” going on to recount some personal issues involving a kidney stone — ouch!
“Go get the new kernel,” he encourages.
The next release, Linux 4.14, will be a Long Term Support (LTS) release.
Linux 4.13 Features
Among the Linux 4.13 features you will find the following hardware and software improvements:
- Initial Intel Cannonlake & Coffeelake support
- HDMI 3D/stereoscopic support in Nouveau driver
- DRM object sync support
- Thunderbolt improvements
- Support for the Retrode2 joypad adapter

Each kernel update adds support for new ARM devices/boards/SoCs and Linux 4.13 is no exception. It adds support for the Bubblegum 96, the Rockchip RV1108 SoC, and many of the newer Orange Pi boards including the Orange Pi Win, Orange Pi Zero Plus 2, and Orange Pi Prime.

Install Linux 4.13 on Ubuntu
Only the brave and foolish will want to upgrade to Linux 4.12 on Ubuntu right now as it requires the use of mainline Linux kernel builds intended for Ubuntu developers to use in debug and testing. Undeterred? The UUKU app makes it easy to install mainline Linux kernel on Ubuntu.
Ubuntu 17.10 will use the Linux 4.13 kernel by default, while this kernel (or later) will be back ported to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in the next point release.
The Skype Redesign Everyone Hates Is Now Available on Linux
The ‘radical’ redesign of Skype that most of the internet seems to hate is now available on Linux — hurrah!
But before you get anxious about upgrading I should say that the redesign is not being forced on you — not yet, anyway!
Instead, to try what Microsoft calls “the most expressive Skype ever” on Linux you have to opt-in to a new desktop preview.
Microsoft debuted its ‘next generation’ Skype back in June. The colourful, trendy, mobile-first redesign has attracted harsh criticism from both fans of the service and tech pundits alike.
Ubuntu 17.10 Will Use GNOME Shell 3.26
Most of us expected that Ubuntu 17.10 would manage to with GNOME Shell 3.26 on board — but it’s nice to hear it confirmed.
A feature-freeze exception filed pending a package update last week has been approved, and now the first packages of GNOME Shell 3.26 are filtering out through the artful-proposed repository, ready for testing by users of the Ubuntu 17.10 daily builds.
“The Ubuntu Desktop Team wants to ship gnome-shell/mutter 3.26 with Ubuntu 17.10. The new version appears to improve responsiveness and has quite a few other improvements and tweaks,” the bug reads.
Citrix XenApp / XenDesktop 7.15 LTSR
Citrix heeft een nieuwe versie uitgegeven van XenApp en XenDesktop. Het versienummer is vastgezet op 7.15 en is voorzien van het LTSR-stempel waarvan de voordelen op deze pagina uiteengezet worden. XenDesktop is een virtual desktop infrastructure, of kortweg vdi, voor het aanbieden van een gevirtualiseerde Windows desktop-omgeving. XenApp neemt het aanbieden van applicaties voor zijn rekening.
