Beta: ‘Novell Vibe’

Afgelopen week kondigde Novell de beta aan van het nieuwe platform van Novell voor het samenwerken binnen ondernemingen; ‘Novell Vibe’. Er bestaat een versie van ‘in de cloud’ en een binnen het bedrijf (‘on premise’ noemt Novell dat). Binnen Novell Vibe worden Novell Teaming en Novell Pulse gecombineerd; Teaming wordt ‘Novell Vibe OnPrem’, en Pulse wordt ‘Novell Vibe Cloud’. Van beide producten is de open beta beschikbaar; hier van Vibe OnPrem en hier van Vibe Cloud. Volgens Novell zijn er functioneel nog wel verschillen tussen de twee versies, maar is het de bedoeling dat die in de toekomst naar elkaar toe groeien. Met beide is het mogelijk om online contact te houden met iemand waar je tegelijk mee aan een document werkt, en daarnaast is er dan sprake van file management, groups, profiles, workflow en functies voor beveiliging en beheer. De verschillen liggen zo:

XBMC Dharma Beta 4

Well, beta 3 had a few regressions. So rather than moving along to rc1, we decided to throw out one last (we hope!) beta. There a few things to take note of:

* Live now contains an Audio Mixer. You’ll find it in the Programs section. Non-Live users (Linux and OSX) may install it from the add-ons browser. This replaces the previous scripts that attempted to set volume levels. As a result, volumes may be low or muted by default, but now you can adjust them with your remote.
* After installing a skin from the add-on browser, you’ll now be prompted to switch to it. It just makes sense.
* Don’t you hate it when programs add a shiny new feature and force you to use it, even if you absolutely hate it? We do too! If you don’t want to be notified about add-ons at all, now you can disable notifications completely. Just go to the add-on browser options and turn them off.
* Ubuntu Maverick packages are now ready for testing.

Strings have been frozen for a while already, but we decided it was important enough to get those settings in for Dharma. So translators please take notice.

This late in the release cycle, we are hoping that beta4 is relatively boring. If all goes well, we’ll push out an RC1 soon.

MythTV 0.24

MythTV logo (45 pix)Woensdag is de final release van versie 0.24 van MythTV beschikbaar gekomen. MythTV is een verzameling programma’s die het mogelijk maken om een Linux-machine als htpc te gebruiken. Zo kunnen tv-programma’s worden bekeken en opgenomen, dvd’s en muziek worden afgespeeld en foto’s worden bekeken. Ook kan door het installeren van plug-ins functionaliteit worden toegevoegd, zoals een webbrowser, spelletjes, het weerbericht en het opzoeken van filminformatie. Hieronder is een overzicht van de veranderingen in versie 0.24 te vinden.

OpenOffice.org wordt ‘LibreOffice’

Een groep van ontwikkelaars achter OpenOffice.org heeft zich demonstratief gedistantieerd van Oracle, door zichzelf te hernoemen naar de ‘Document Foundation’, en OpenOffice.org voortaan de naam ‘LibreOffice’ te geven. OpenOffice.org is ooit voortgekomen uit StarOffice, een product van het door Sun overgenomen Duitse ‘StarDivision’. Sinds de overname van Sun door Oracle groeide er onvrede onder de OpenOffice.org-ontwikkelaars; zij voelden zich in plaats van deel uitmaken van de oplossing meer ‘onderdeel van het probleem’. Volgens een woordvoerder van de Document Foundation is LibreOffice niet een aparte afsplitsing van OpenOffice.org, maar meer een voortzetting van het originele project. De Document Foundation heeft aan Oracle gevraagd of zij het merk ‘OpenOffice.org’ blijvend mogen gebruiken, maar als Oracle weigert, blijft het LibreOffice. Critici vragen zich af of de Document Foundation wel genoeg steun onder de ontwikkelaars krijgt; Oracle heeft ook nog altijd ontwikkelaars die werken aan OpenOffice.org. Maar anderen wijzen er op dat Sun veel te strikt regeerde over OpenOffice.org, en dat het project veel meer had kunnen bereiken wanneer er meer vrijheid zou zijn geweest.

What’s New

VMware Workstation 7.1.2 is a maintenance release that includes new features, adds support for newly released operating systems, addresses customer reported problems, and resolves security as well as some known issues.

  • Added Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 support for Integrated Virtual Debugger´s live debugging mode.
  • Many issues with running Windows 7 SP1 Beta, RHEL 6.0 Beta, and Fedora 13 in a virtual machine have been addressed. Each of these Operating System versions are still in development and have known issues, therefore they are not fully supported.
  • NAT networking includes several performance improvements.
  • VMware Workstation 7.1.2 has been tested with the new free standalone VMware vCenter Converter 4.3. VMware vCenter Converter can convert a single machine or an entire datacenter into virtual machines and it supports Windows 7.   • Easy Install now supports older versions of CentOS.
  • Added Windows 2008R2 and Apache Server 2.2.15 support for ACE Management Server.

XBMC Media Center (Dharma) 10.0 bèta 2

De ontwikkelaars van XBMC Media Center hebben de tweede bèta uitgebracht van versie 10.0, die Dharma als codenaam draagt. XBMC Media Center is crossplatform-mediacentersoftware met ondersteuning voor Mac OS X, Linux, Windows en AppleTV. De ondersteuning voor de originele Xbox is sinds eind mei van dit jaar afgesplitst naar het aparte project XBMC4Xbox. De voorlopige lijst met veranderingen voor versie 10.0 vermeldt verschillende aanpassingen, zoals een verbetering van het framework en de engine voor skins, en nieuwe scrapers die zijn toegevoegd. Verder is weer het nodige werk verzet aan het verbreden van de afspeelmogelijkheden.
