Er is ook een OpenOffice.org versie van Novell, met functies die in andere versies ontbreken. OpenOffice.org 2.0 for Windows Novell Edition gebruikt de dialogen van Windows zodat het er als andere Windows-applicaties uit ziet, ondersteunt meer Office-documenten en ondersteunt het e-mailen van Office-documenten (normaal ondersteunt OpenOffice.org alleen het mailen van PDF’s). Bovendien kunnen met deze versie Excel-macro’s worden geconverteerd. Novell zegt erbij dat niet alle macro’s succesvol kunnen worden omgezet. Gemeente Groningen stapt over op OpenOffice.org

De gemeente Groningen heeft besloten om een overeenkomst met Microsoft voor de levering van de Office-suite van de softwaregigant te laten verlopen. De noordelijke gemeente heeft namelijk besloten om over te stappen op het opensourcepakket OpenOffice.org. Hiermee is de gemeente Groningen volgens eigen zeggen de grootste gemeente in Nederland die serieus met opensourcesoftware aan de slag gaat.

Op de website van de Groenlinks-afdeling Groningen is te lezen dat de raadscommissie van de gemeente op 12 juli heeft ingestemd met het voorstel van de wethouder Karin Dekker om het contract met Microsoft op te zeggen. Gisteren is dit voorstel bekrachtigd in een raadsvergadering, waarmee Groningen geen nieuwe versies van het Office-pakket van Microsoft zal krijgen. De gemeente bespaart met deze stap jaarlijks een bedrag van 330.000 euro, zo blijkt uit het voorstel. De helft van dit bedrag, 160.000 euro, zal worden gebruikt voor de migratie naar OpenOffice.org, terwijl het resterende bedrag zal worden gereserveerd voor licentiekosten voor wanneer het in de toekomst toch nog noodzakelijk blijkt om nieuwe versies van Microsoft Office aan te schaffen. De gemeenteraad heeft echter gemeld dat dit scenario niet zijn voorkeur heeft, en dit gereserveerde bedrag uiteindelijk benut kan worden voor andere dingen.

De gemeente Groningen werkt al geruime tijd aan aan de invoering van Open Standaarden en Open Source Software (OSOSS) met als streven om de afhankelijkheid van één softwareproducent te verminderen. Uit een recent onderzoek door de gemeente blijkt echter dat het nog niet haalbaar is om over te stappen op een volledige opensourcedesktop, waarbij als besturingssysteem voor Linux zou worden gekozen. De gemeente Groningen zal daarom nog wel het contract met Microsoft voor het gebruik van Windows verlengen, wat jaarlijks 135.000 euro kost. Groningen streeft er nu naar om de werkplekken ‘besturingssyteem onafhankelijk’ te maken, zodat in de toekomst willicht wel volledig naar Linux kan worden overgestapt.

Novell brengt Suse Linux Enterprice 10 uit

Novell heeft via een persbericht aan de wereld laten weten dat het Suse Linux Enterprise 10, dat bestaat uit Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) en Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED), heeft uitgebracht. De servereditie van het softwarepakket is voorzien van de hypervisorsoftware Xen 3.0, waarmee het mogelijk is om meerdere virtuele instanties van een besturingssysteem tegelijk op een fysieke server te draaien. Verder is SLES 10 uitgerust met AppArmor, een toolset die gebruikt kan worden voor het beschermen van computernetwerken en Linux-applicaties tegen aanvallen van ongewenste indringers. Het is hiermee een concurrent van SELinux, dat onder meer steun ontvangt van Red Hat. Het kloppend hart van Suse Linux Enterprise Server vormt versie 2.6.16 van de Linux-kernel. Daarnaast is de serversoftware uitgerust met een groot aantal applicaties, waaronder de nieuwste stabiele versies van Apache, PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python, MySQL, PostgreSQL. Concurrent Red Hat zal in december versie 5 van zijn Enterprise Server uitbrengen.

Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop werd begin maart al aangekondigd. Zo is in deze versie van de Linux-distributie standaard de combinatie xgl/compiz aanwezig, waarover we eerder al schreven. Verder is SLED 10 voorzien van Novells eigen versie van de officesuite OpenOffice.org, die onder meer verbeteringen bevat op het gebied van Visual Basic for Applications en de ondersteuning van draaitabellen uit Excel. Verder is versie 2.6 van de e-mailsoftware Evolution aanwezig, die voorzien is van betere support van Microsofts Exchange en Novells eigen Groupwise. Een andere nieuwe feature vormt de aanwezigheid van de desktopsearchtool Beagle, waarmee het mogelijk is vrijwel realtime documenten, afbeeldingen, e-mails en andere zaken op te zoeken. Voor SLES moet per jaar per server 349 dollar betaald worden. Voor mainframes liggen de jaarlijkse kosten hoger, namelijk ergens tussen de 11.999 en 18.000 dollar. In beide gevallen maakt het niet uit hoe vaak de software geïnstalleerd wordt via virtuele servers. SLED kost per jaar per desktop 50 dollar.
