Gisteren verscheen van XenSource XenEnterprise v4, het product dat het moet gaan opnemen met VMware. XenEnterprise v4 bevat een reeks nieuwe functies, zoals XenMotion, waarmee meer hosts kunnen worden samengevoegd in een eenheid die vanuit een centrale plek kan worden beheerd. Virtuele machines kunnen binnen die eenheid eenvoudig worden gemigreerd en nieuwe virtuele machines kunnen eenvoudig worden toegevoegd. Dankzij de 64-bit Hypervisor wordt tot 128 GB fysiek geheugen ondersteund, en per guest 32 GB. Voor het maken van backups werkt XenSource samen met Symantec; de Veritas Storage Foundation software ondersteunt XenEnterprise v4, en moet later ook worden meegeleverd.
Een licentie op XenEnterprise v4 kost $2.499,-. Ondersteuni ng kan middels een jaarabonnement worden gekocht.

The GIMP 2.4.0 rc1
The Gimp, een acroniem dat staat voor GNU Image Manipulation Program, is een fotobewerkingsprogramma en wordt door velen beschouwd als de opensource tegenhanger van Adobe Photoshop en Corel Paint Shop Pro. Het programma is beschikbaar voor verschillende besturingssystemen zoals Linux, Mac OS X en Windows. De ontwikkelaars hebben de eerste release candidate van versie 2.4.0 uitgebracht en voorzien van de volgende aankondiging en lijst met aanpassingen:
The next stable GIMP release is close. The developers made available a first release candidate for GIMP 2.4.0. This marks the end of the development cycle towards GIMP 2.4. All new features should be complete and the API is now frozen. There are however still a few bugs to fix and some minor changes pending in some places.

openSuse 10.3 beta 1
De ontwikkelaars van de openSuse-community hebben de eerste bètaversie uitgebracht van openSuse 10.3, sinds ongeveer een jaar de nieuwe naam van Suse Linux om verwarring met Suse Linux Enterprise-producten te voorkomen. Zoals gewoonlijk zijn er verschillende uitgaves binnen te halen, een volledige dvd met opensource- en niet-opensourceonderdelen, een cd voor een kale installatie met KDE of GNOME, en verschillende add-on-cd’s. De aankondiging van deze eerste bètaversie ziet er als volgt uit:
The openSUSE team is proud to announce the first Beta release of openSUSE 10.3. There are many exciting enhancements and features in the new release. Among these are a whole new and greatly improved package management stack (libzypp), significantly faster boot time, parts of KDE 4, a 1-CD KDE Install and a 1-CD GNOME install, beautiful green artwork, a new One-Click Install technology that integrates with the openSUSE Build Service and much more.
Desktop Advances:
1-Click Install: As we recently announced, the openSUSE Build Service front-end got a complete makeover and now also utilizes the new One-Click Install technology. This new feature allows you to install applications at the single click of a button. More announcements on the way this is used are to come.
KDE 4: In the early stages of development we noted that openSUSE was to be among the early adopters of KDE 4.0, and we can start to see this coming through in openSUSE 10.3. The latest stable KDE 3.5.7 is included as the default KDE session, but this release also includes some KDE 4 applications (such as KDE games) in by default. All other parts of KDE 4 are directly available in the official online repositories, and of course the KDE 4 repository in the openSUSE Build Service will continue to regularly release snapshots.
New Media Selection:
This new release has a few changes in media, which also includes two new CDs: one KDE installation CD, and one GNOME installation CD, so you no longer have to download three CDs to get openSUSE running!
Under the Hood:
New Package Management: The new package management system (libzypp) is a significant improvement over the old one offering you many advanced features, increased reliability, and an incredible speed-up.
Improved Boot Time: Improvements in boot time were frequently-suggested enhancement requests from openSUSE users. As the result of continued tests, we can now release the first set of improvements to the init (boot) scripts, with even more to come in the future.

Novell-topman pleit voor Linux-standaard
Novell-ceo Ron Hovsepian heeft tijdens de LinuxWorld-conferentie gepleit voor een neutrale standaard voor het ontwikkelen van applicaties voor Linux. Anders verwacht hij dat Linux, net als Unix, ten onder zal gaan aan fragmentatie.
Volgens Hovsepian is de Linux Standards Base, een project met het doel om de interne structuur van Linux-systemen te standaardiseren, niet voldoende. De Novell-topman meent dat er meer nodig is, namelijk independent software vendor-certificatie voor Linux. Op die manier hoopt hij dat de fragmentatie binnen Linux-land kan worden tegengegaan en er een isv-gemeenschap kan groeien, zoals die ook voor het Windows-ecosysteem bestaat. Volgens Hovsepian was het namelijk het gebrek aan applicaties dat ervoor gezorgd heeft dat Unix geen groter succes is geworden en is ditzelfde probleem ook een valkuil voor de groei van Linux. Het genoemde certificaat moet ervoor zorgen dat een programma onder alle Linux-smaken is te draaien.
Hovsepian is blij dat er een groeiend aantal bedrijven is dat Linux-software uitbrengt, hoewel het niet altijd om opensourcesoftware gaat. Tijdens zijn toespraak bedankte de Novell-topman de Free Software Foundation voor het werk dat verzet is voor GPLv3. Volgens Hovsepian zou Linux niet zijn waar het nu is als de FSF er niet geweest was. Verder liet hij weten dat Suse Linux Enterprise Server, ondanks Microsofts harde woorden over de nieuwe licentie, gewoon GPLv3-software gaat bevatten. Tot slot vertelde Hovsepian dat de deal met Microsoft nodig was, omdat klanten werken in een gemixte Windows- en Linux-omgeving en het – met die klanten in het achterhoofd – daardoor onhoudbaar zou zijn om elke vorm van samenwerking te blijven weigeren.
Lenovo gaat notebooks met Linux leveren
In navolging van het bericht dat Lenovo geen systemen zou gaan verkopen met Linux, wat korte tijd later weer ontkracht werd, kondigt de pc-bouwer een jaar later officieel aan dat het ook buiten China Linux-laptops op de markt zal gaan brengen.
Lenovo, de nummer drie computerbouwer van het moment, kondigde op het jaarlijkse evenement LinuxWorld aan dat het zal gaan starten met het aanbieden van Linux-systemen. Dell begon op veler verzoek met het verkopen van Linux-pc’s en -laptops en het ziet er naar uit dat het daar voorlopig nog wel mee door zal gaan. Of het voor Lenovo hetzelfde uit zal pakken zal nog moeten blijken. Lenovo lijkt in ieder geval een iets andere weg in te slaan: waar Dell koos voor een Linux-distributie van de non-profitorganisatie Ubuntu, zal Lenovo zijn laptops gaan voorzien van Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 van Novell. De notebooks, waaronder mogelijk een aantal uit de ThinkPad T-serie, moeten in het vierde kwartaal van dit jaar op de markt komen, voor zowel de zakelijke markt als voor de gewone consument. Hoeveel verschillende laptops het zullen zijn, de mogelijke prijzen ervan en welke hardware er zal worden gebruikt is verder nog niet bekendgemaakt.
Pidgin 2.1.0
Pidgin – de nieuwe naam van Gaim – is een multiprotocol instant messaging-client voor Windows en Unix-achtige besturingssystemen. Hiermee kunnen berichten uitgewisseld worden via verschillende im-netwerken, zoals MSN, AIM, Jabber, ICQ en IRC. De ontwikkelaars hebben een nieuwe versie uitgebracht die een honderdvijftigtal bugs zou moeten oplossen en voorzien is van enkele nieuwe ui-concepten. Het versienummer is aangekomen bij 2.1.0 en voorzien van de volgende aankondiging: Sean: This release took a bit longer than 3 weeks, but boy is it worth it! We’re beginning to experiment with new UI concepts and this release features a largely re-designed conversation window. We’ve closed 150 tickets for this release; much thanks go to all the developers, translators, and testers who made this possible. Ka-Hing: Sean said no one else NEWS’ed, so I figure I should.
Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.6
Zoals gewoonlijk stroomde onze submit-queue weer over van meldingen over een nieuwe Mozilla Firefox-versie. De nieuwe versie draagt volgnummer 2.0.0.6 en biedt een oplossing voor twee beveiligingslekken. De inmiddels beruchte ‘cross–browser–bug‘ zou hiermee tot het verleden moeten behoren.
