openSUSE 10.3 RC1

openSUSE 10.3 Release Candidate 1 is available for download.
The next planned release is the openSUSE 10.3 final release, on the Thursday, 4th October!

openSUSE 10.3 RC1 for i386, x86-64 and ppc is available as different media sets. All can be downloaded at software.openSUSE.org/developer. Here’s the run-down:

  • 1 DVD containing OSS and NonOSS software (torrents for: i386, x86_64, ppc). Languages supported: English, Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese (Simpl. & Trad.), Japanese, Russian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Finnish, Danish, Swedish, Dutch
  • 1 CD with a default KDE installation (i386, x86_64, not for ppc, English only)
  • 1 CD with a default GNOME installation (i386, x86_64, not for ppc, English only)
  • 1 AddOn CD with only NonOSS packages (i386 or x86_64, ppc)
  • 1 AddOn CD with language packages that are used for extra languages (i386, x86_64, ppc, only to be used with DVDs!)
  • DVD containing the sources corresponding to the media
  • 1 Live CD for both KDE and GNOME (i386)

Gnome 2.20

De ontwikkelaars van Gnome hebben weer hun halfjaarlijkse update uitgebracht en voorzien van 2.20 als versienummer. Deze populaire desktopomgeving voor *nix-systemen wordt zoals gewoonlijk niet als kant en klare installatie geleverd maar zal zelfstandig moeten worden gecompileerd in de juiste volgorde of bij een update van je favoriete Linux-distributie meegeleverd worden. De zeer beknopte aankondiging ziet er als volgt uit:

The improvements in GNOME 2.20 include: Improved support for right-to-left languages; desktop search integrated into the file chooser dialog; convenient new features in the Evolution email and calendar client; enhanced browsing of image collections; simplified system preferences; efficient power management and incredibly accurate laptop battery monitoring. Developers receive more help with application development thanks to a new version of the GTK+ toolkit, improved tools, and a great new documentation web site.

Novell stopt VMI in SUSE

Novell heeft verbeteringen aangebracht in de manier waarop SUSE Linux Enterprise Server draait als guest virtual machine in een VMware omgeving. Dit zou merkbaar zijn in de prestaties. Hiervoor heeft Novell de kernel van SUSE Linux Enterprise gemodificeerd, zodat deze de VMware Virtual Machine Interface (VMI) ondersteunt. VMI is een communicatiemechanisme tussen guest en de hypervisor, die het virtualiseren vereenvoudigt en Linux als guest efficiënter maakt. De aanpassingen zijn geaccepteerd door de Linux ontwikkelomgeving en zullen ook in toekomstige versies van de standaard Linux kernel terug te vinden zijn.

Collaboration client: Notes met SLED

IBM en Novell hebben een client aangekondigd voor SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop met daarin IBM Lotus Notes, IBM Lotus Sametime en andere software voor een complete kantooromgeving. De client is gebouwd op het Eclipse open framework, waardoor er andere programmatuur redelijk eenvoudig aan kan worden toegevoegd, waaronder IBM Lotus Connections, IBM Lotus Quickr en IBM WebSphere Portal. De server-componenten die de client ondersteunen bestaan uit IBM Lotus Domino en Lotus Sametime servers op SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.
