Firefox 2, ook wel ‘Bon Echo’ genoemd, is een cross platform open-sourcebrowser voor het internet en bevat een aantal nieuwe features en verbeteringen ten opzichte van de huidige Firefox 1-reeks. Zo heeft bijvoorbeeld elke tab een aparte sluitknop en kent de browser ‘built-in phishing protection’. De ontwikkelaars van Mozilla hebben de eerste release candidate van Firefox 2.0 beschikbaar gesteld. Deze versie kan vanaf hier gedownload worden in diverse uitvoeringen, waaronder voor Linux, Mac OS X en Windows. Het is niet bekend wat er in RC1 precies veranderd is, aangezien de release notes hetzelfde zijn als die van beta 2. Maar vermoedelijk zijn de nodige bugs uit de software gehaald en is de stabiliteit iets verbeterd:

• Visual Refresh: Firefox 2’s theme and user interface have been updated to improve usability without altering the familiarity of the browsing experience. For instance, toolbar buttons now glow when you hover over them. We will continue to improve the look and feel throughout the release candidate process.
• Built-in phishing protection: Phishing Protection warns users when they encounter suspected Web forgeries, and offers to return the user to their home page. Phishing Protection is turned on by default, and works by checking sites against either a local or online list of known phishing sites. This list is automatically downloaded and regularly updated when the Phishing Protection feature is enabled.
• Enhanced search capabilities: Search term suggestions will now appear as users type in the integrated search box when using the Google, Yahoo! or Answers.com search engines. A new search engine manager makes it easier to add, remove and re-order search engines, and users will be alerted when Firefox encounters a website that offers new search engines that the user may wish to install.
• Improved tabbed browsing: By default, Firefox will open links in new tabs instead of new windows, and each tab will now have a close tab button. Power users who open more tabs than can fit in a single window will see arrows on the left and right side of the tab strip that let them scroll back and forth between their tabs. The History menu will keep a list of recently closed tabs, and a shortcut lets users quickly re-open an accidentally closed tab.
• Resuming your browsing session: The Session Restore feature restores windows, tabs, text typed in forms, and in-progress downloads from the last user session. It will be activated automatically when installing an application update or extension, and users will be asked if they want to resume their previous session after a system crash.
• Previewing and subscribing to Web feeds: Users can decide how to handle Web feeds (like this one), either subscribing to them via a Web service or in a standalone RSS reader, or adding them as Live Bookmarks. My Yahoo!, Bloglines and Google Reader come pre-loaded as Web service options, but users can add any Web service that handles RSS feeds.
• Inline spell checking: A new built-in spell checker enables users to quickly check the spelling of text entered into Web forms (like this one) without having to use a separate application.
• Live Titles: When a website offers a microsummary (a regularly updated summary of the most important information on a Web page), users can create a bookmark with a “Live Title”. Compact enough to fit in the space available to a bookmark label, they provide more useful information about pages than static page titles, and are regularly updated with the latest information. There are several websites that can be bookmarked with Live Titles, and even more add-ons to generate Live Titles for other popular websites.
• Improved Add-ons manager: The new Add-ons manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes, combining them both in a single tool.
• JavaScript 1.7: JavaScript 1.7 is a language update introducing several new features such as generators, iterators, array comprehensions, let expressions, and destructuring assignments. It also includes all the features of JavaScript 1.6.
• Extended search plugin format: The Firefox search engine format now supports search engine plugins written in Sherlock and OpenSearch formats and allows search engines to provide search term suggestions.
• Updates to the extension system: The extension system has been updated to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions.
• Client-side session and persistent storage: New support for storing structured data on the client side, to enable better handling of online transactions and improved performance when dealing with large amounts of data, such as documents and mailboxes. This is based on the WHATWG specification for client-side session and persistent storage.
• SVG text: Support for the svg:textpath specification enables SVG text to follow a curve or shape.
• New Windows installer: Based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, the new Windows installer resolves many long-standing issues.

Drie jaar na de aankondiging van het gemeentebestuur van München om over te stappen op Linux is de knop eindelijk omgezet. De computers van honderd ambtenaren zijn bekeerd tot een Debian-besturingsysteem en het is de bedoeling dat tussen nu en kerst nog eens honderd systemen migreren naar dit pakket. Tegen de zomer van 2009 zal, zo is de planning, 80 procent van alle overheidssystemen Linux draaien, wat neerkomt op 14.000 computers. Het project, tot LiMux gedoopt, is sinds de start van de pilot-fase op talloze problemen gestuit, waaronder trammalant omtrent softwarepatenten. Florian Schießl, projectleider van LiMux, verklaarde echter afgelopen maandag dat alle kinken uit de kabel waren gewerkt en de release van start kon gaan. De man denkt overigens dat volledige migratie naar Linux niet mogelijk zal zijn vanwege sommige gespecialiseerde software en hardware die alleen onder Windows naar wens functioneren. Dit is een schrale troost voor Microsoft, die met een reeks aanbiedingen en kortingen tevergeefs het stadsbestuur op andere gedachten had geprobeerd te brengen. Zelfs een bezoek van Steve Ballmer, die voor die gelegenheid zijn skivakantie onderbrak, mocht niet baten.
Ondertussen lopen de kosten voor het LiMux-project hoger op dan gepland. Waar drie jaar geleden nog 30 miljoen euro voldoende leek te zijn, worden de kosten nu geschat op 35 miljoen. Schießl weigert daarentegen om een vergelijking te maken: ‘We hebben niet tot doel gesteld om de totale eigendomskosten te vergelijken. Microsoft stopte met de ondersteuning voor Windows NT 4.0, dus moesten we migreren.’ München is niet de enige Europese stad die de stap naar open-sourcesoftware heeft overwogen. Mannheim is daarin de stad al voorgegaan en draait Linux op de meeste overheidsdesktops en -servers. In Groot-Brittanië is de gemeenteraad van Birmingham aan het experimenteren met OSS op haar systemen en Bristol is overgestapt op StarOffice. Twee jaar terug kondigde Frankrijk ook aan om de mogelijkheden van OSS verder te gaan uitdiepen. De Noorse stad Bergen besloot begin deze maand zijn aandacht op belangrijkere zaken te richten en heeft zijn Linux-project voor twee jaar in de ijskast gestopt.

Toekomstige versies van de officesuite OpenOffice.org zullen samen met de e-mailsoftware Mozilla Thunderbird en het kalenderprogramma Mozilla Sunbird geleverd worden. Wanneer deze gebundelde pakketten op de markt gaan komen, is nog niet bekend. Wel is zeker dat er software geschreven zal worden om de Mozilla-software verbinding te laten maken met Sun Calendar Server en Microsoft Exchange. Verder hebben de OpenOffice.org-developers laten weten dat versie 2.0.4 van het officepakket zal worden uitgerust met de mogelijkheid om gebruik te maken van extensies, op dezelfde manier als dat bijvoorbeeld bij Mozilla Firefox en Mozilla Thunderbird mogelijk is. Deze extensies zullen geschreven kunnen worden in verschillende programmeertalen, zoals Java, StarBasic, C++, Python, Perl en JavaScript. OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 zal eind september of begin oktober gelanceerd worden.
Niet alle softwareontwikkelaars zijn blij met deze ontwikkeling. Het goed op orde krijgen van de veiligheid van de extensiefunctionaliteit in Firefox heeft de Mozilla-gemeenschap enkele maanden gekost en die tijd zouden de OpenOffice.org-developers beter aan andere zaken kunnen besteden, zo menen de tegenstanders. Ook over de bundeling van de officesuite met Thunderbird en Sunbird zijn gemengde reacties te vinden. Sommigen menen dat OpenOffice.org al over meer dan voldoende features beschikt en dat extra programma’s daarom niet nodig zijn. Tot slot is er wat duidelijkheid gekomen over versie 3 van OpenOffice.org. Die release zal in het teken staan van een verdere modularisering van de software en het mogelijk maken om OpenOffice.org te laten draaien bovenop andere frameworks, zoals Eclipse, Netbeans en Mozilla’s XUL.

Installing GroupWise WebAccess on SLES 10

situation

Installing WebAccess Application on an existing Apache/Tomcat instance on SLES10.

resolution

This solution assumes a new install of a SLES10 server and that the WebAccess Agent is running on a separate server.  In the case of Monitor the agent will be running elsewhere also.

Make sure that the following RPM’s are installed:

apache2
tomcat5

Resolve any dependencies.  Once the installation is complete go into YaST | Network Services | HTTP Server | Server Modules.  Enable proxy

Then select Add Module.  From the resulting list select proxy_ajp.

If you are not able to select proxy_ajp then you will need to manually enter it in the YaST Sysconfig Editor.

Select Finish.

Run the GroupWise install (by default this is /opt/novell/groupwise/software/install) and install the WebAccess Application (do not select the option to install with Apache and Tomcat).  This simply installs the RPM.

Once the install is complete select Configure WebAccess Application.
When prompted for WebAccess agents gateway directory it is only actually needing the COMMGR.CFG file.

Copy this from the <domain>\wpgate\webac70a directory where GWINTER runs to a local directory on the SLES server and point the install at the directory it is in.  The installation program then copies the file to /opt/novell/groupwise/webaccess.

When prompted for the paths to Apache and Tomcat make sure to change them from the defaults:

The installation program requires LDAP access to an eDirectory server so that it can create the application objects.  If the server is in a DMZ it will be necessary to temporarily open the firewall for the installation.  A common problem at this point is that the eDirectory LDAP server requires an SSL connection.  It will be necessary to either supply the installation program with the LDAP servers SSL certificate, or disable the SSL/TLS requirement on the LDAP Group object in eDirectory.
Once the install is complete, LDAP access is no longer required.

SLES 10 no longer ships with the MOD_JK package like SLES 9 did.  It is now necessary to use the MOD_PROXY modules instead, so some manual configuration is required at this point.

Edit /etc/apache2/conf.d/gw.conf
Remove the line:
“JkMount /gw/* ajp13”

Insert a line at the top:
ProxyPass /gw/ ajp://localhost:8009/gw/

For Monitor the line will be
ProxyPass /gwmon/ ajp://localhost:8009/gwmon/

Save the file.

Start Apache2 with
         /etc/init.d/apache2 start

Start Tomcat5 with:

        /etc/init.d/tomcat5 start

To ensure that these services start next time the SLES server restarts enter:

        chkconfig apache2 on

        chkconfig tomcat5 on

Access WebAccess using /gw/webacc instead of /servlet/webacc

De gemeente Groningen heeft besloten om een overeenkomst met Microsoft voor de levering van de Office-suite van de softwaregigant te laten verlopen. De noordelijke gemeente heeft namelijk besloten om over te stappen op het opensourcepakket OpenOffice.org. Hiermee is de gemeente Groningen volgens eigen zeggen de grootste gemeente in Nederland die serieus met opensourcesoftware aan de slag gaat.

Op de website van de Groenlinks-afdeling Groningen is te lezen dat de raadscommissie van de gemeente op 12 juli heeft ingestemd met het voorstel van de wethouder Karin Dekker om het contract met Microsoft op te zeggen. Gisteren is dit voorstel bekrachtigd in een raadsvergadering, waarmee Groningen geen nieuwe versies van het Office-pakket van Microsoft zal krijgen. De gemeente bespaart met deze stap jaarlijks een bedrag van 330.000 euro, zo blijkt uit het voorstel. De helft van dit bedrag, 160.000 euro, zal worden gebruikt voor de migratie naar OpenOffice.org, terwijl het resterende bedrag zal worden gereserveerd voor licentiekosten voor wanneer het in de toekomst toch nog noodzakelijk blijkt om nieuwe versies van Microsoft Office aan te schaffen. De gemeenteraad heeft echter gemeld dat dit scenario niet zijn voorkeur heeft, en dit gereserveerde bedrag uiteindelijk benut kan worden voor andere dingen.

De gemeente Groningen werkt al geruime tijd aan aan de invoering van Open Standaarden en Open Source Software (OSOSS) met als streven om de afhankelijkheid van één softwareproducent te verminderen. Uit een recent onderzoek door de gemeente blijkt echter dat het nog niet haalbaar is om over te stappen op een volledige opensourcedesktop, waarbij als besturingssysteem voor Linux zou worden gekozen. De gemeente Groningen zal daarom nog wel het contract met Microsoft voor het gebruik van Windows verlengen, wat jaarlijks 135.000 euro kost. Groningen streeft er nu naar om de werkplekken ‘besturingssyteem onafhankelijk’ te maken, zodat in de toekomst willicht wel volledig naar Linux kan worden overgestapt.
